Online Store to Sell: 4 Models Compared for Egypt
Starting an online store to sell in Egypt: physical products, dropshipping, digital products or services compared on capital, risk, payments and shipping.
Starting an online store to sell begins with one decision, before any platform or theme: what will you sell, and with which model? There are four main models: a store selling products you hold in stock, a dropshipping store (the supplier ships for you), a digital products store (no shipping), and a services store. Each needs different capital and a different payment and shipping setup, and the right platform has to support the model you choose.
The short version: have a product and a little capital for stock? Sell physical products. No capital and want to test? Dropshipping, but with thinner margins and higher return risk. Can you create content, designs or a course? A digital products store, with higher margins and no shipping. Offer a service? A services store with booking and upfront payment. In Egypt, any model with a physical product has to handle cash on delivery properly.

The four online selling models compared
| Model | Starting capital | Stock | Shipping | Best payment method | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Physical products (your own stock) | Medium | You hold it | You or a courier | Cash on delivery plus online | Unsold stock |
| Dropshipping | Low | The supplier holds it | Supplier or an agreed courier | Usually cash on delivery in Egypt | Supplier quality and returns |
| Digital products | Very low | None | None, instant download | Online, paid upfront | Copying and unauthorised sharing |
| Services | Low | None | None | Upfront payment or a deposit | Your time and capacity to deliver |
A store selling physical products
This is the most common model: you buy or make the goods, store them and sell them from your store. You control quality, packaging and delivery time, but your money is tied up in stock. Start with small quantities of each product until you know what sells.
An online clothing store
With clothing, the biggest problem is usually sizing. Add a size chart in centimetres for each style, photos on a real model, and the fabric clearly stated. Keep exchanges easy, because size swaps are a frequent request.
An online bookstore
For books, customers need the title, author, publisher, edition and, if used, the condition. Prices are often low, so shipping can eat the profit; consider offers such as "buy three, free shipping" to raise the order value.
Phones and electronics
Trust matters most here: state the warranty, its length and who provides it, the device's condition and its exact specifications. High prices make cash on delivery riskier, so confirm every order by call or message before shipping.
Starting a dropshipping store in Egypt
With dropshipping, you list a supplier's products on your store, the customer orders from you, and the supplier packs and ships. You need no warehouse and little capital, which is why many people start this way. Before you begin, know this:
- Margins are thinner. The supplier takes their share and you pay for ads, so your profit maths must be precise.
- Returns under cash on delivery. Agree with the supplier on who pays for a refused order before you start.
- Quality is out of your hands. Order a sample of every product before you list it.
- Delivery time. Ask the supplier for the real time and state it on the product page.
- You are responsible to the customer. They bought from you, so any complaint comes to you, and they have the right to complain to the Consumer Protection Agency, which explains how on its website.
Because dropshipping runs on a small margin, every refused order hurts. The COD order confirmation playbook will cut refusals before parcels leave.
Drop servicing
Drop servicing is the same idea for services: you sell a service (design, writing, video editing) and a freelancer delivers it. Success depends on the quality of whoever delivers, a clear service description and a clear delivery time. Put the agreement in writing, because the customer will hold you accountable.
Starting a digital products store
Digital products include courses, e-books, templates, files, game cards and subscriptions. There is no shipping and no stock, so margins are higher, but the rules are different:
- Payment must be online and upfront. There is no courier to collect cash. Paymob, for example, lists on its pricing page a standard rate of 2.75% + EGP 3 per transaction.
- Delivery is instant: a download link or code reaches the customer right after payment.
- A clear refund policy. A digital product cannot be returned like a physical one, so state the terms before purchase.
- Protection. Limited download links or a licence key per customer reduce sharing.
A digital products store suits you especially well if you already have a social following that trusts your content.
Starting a store that sells services
If you offer consultations, sessions, photography or repairs, you can list the service as a product: a clear name, a description of what is and is not included, the delivery time, and a price or "from" price. Payment is usually upfront or a deposit, to protect your time from cancelled appointments.
Buying an online store that is for sale
Some people search for an "online store for sale" to buy a working store instead of starting from scratch. Before paying, ask for: real sales figures from the dashboard, the return rate, traffic sources, customer data and who owns it, and how the domain and accounts will be transferred. If the seller cannot show you this, treat it as a warning sign.
After you choose a model: selling and marketing
Whatever the model, your first 30 days depend on three things: a convincing product page, a payment method customers are used to, and consistent marketing. For practical ideas, read seven proven ways to increase your store's sales. And before any ad, work out the profit per order with the formula in what a cash-on-delivery order really costs you.

FAQ
What is the easiest kind of store to start in Egypt?
If you have one product you know well, a small-stock product store is the clearest path. With no capital, dropshipping or digital products cost less to start. The easiest is the one whose profit you can calculate and whose quality you can control.
Is dropshipping profitable in Egypt?
It can be, but margins are thinner than selling your own stock, and returns under cash on delivery hit it hard. Agree with the supplier on who pays for refused orders, order samples, and work out profit per order after ads before you scale.
Can I sell digital products with cash on delivery?
Usually not, because there is no parcel to collect cash on. Digital products are sold with online payment upfront, and the customer receives a link or code right after paying.
How do I set up a store that sells services?
List each service as a product with a clear name, a description of what is included, the delivery time and the price. Ask for upfront payment or a deposit, and write a cancellation policy. If freelancers deliver the work, agree on quality and deadlines in writing.
Should I buy a ready-made store or start from scratch?
If the existing store's numbers are real and you can verify them, it can save time. If the seller cannot show sales, returns and traffic sources, you are better off starting fresh; a new store on a hosted platform can be live within a few days.
