A successful online store idea does not have to be new. It needs a clear customer, a margin that survives shipping, returns and ads, and a delivery method that works in Egypt. Every category below already sells online today; the difference between a store that succeeds and one that fails in the same category lies in execution and arithmetic, not the idea.

The short version: pick a category you understand or where you have an edge (a supplier, expertise or an audience). Know its core challenge before you start: sizing in fashion, delivery in furniture, pricing in gold, shelf life in food. Then do a one-page feasibility study: profit per order, fixed costs, and how many orders you need to cover them.

This article is part of our guide to starting an online store in Egypt. We will not tell you "this idea earns X", because nobody has an honest number for that; we will tell you what each idea needs to work.

Ten online store ideas that work in Egypt

Idea Why it works online Core challenge
1. Fashion and accessories Constant demand; sells well through social media Sizing and exchanges
2. Perfume and cosmetics Small, easy-to-ship products with repeat purchases Convincing buyers the product is genuine
3. Electronics and phone accessories Customers compare and research online Warranty, and high order values under cash on delivery
4. Home decor and furniture Products people browse by photo Delivery and assembly for large items
5. Jewellery and gold High value and distinctive designs Changing prices and trust
6. Grocery and food products Repeat purchases Shelf life and fast delivery
7. Food, restaurants and bakeries Daily demand in your area Short delivery windows and a limited radius
8. Digital products and courses No shipping and no stock Payment must be online, and the content must be worth it
9. Dropshipping Little capital needed Thinner margins, and returns at your cost
10. Subscription boxes Recurring monthly revenue Refreshing the box every month so customers stay

These ten are the same categories Baseet has dedicated pages for on its website.

Each idea in detail: what nobody tells you

A fashion store

The biggest risk is exchanges for size. A size chart in centimetres, photos on a real model and a clear exchange policy reduce the problem. Start with a small range and planned sizes instead of stocking every colour.

Perfume and cosmetics

Customers worry about fakes. State where the product comes from, photograph the real packaging, and keep cash on delivery available for first orders. Repeat purchases make this a strong fit for loyalty programmes, as covered in loyalty programmes for online stores in Egypt.

An online furniture store

Whether your idea is a cheap online furniture store or a mid-priced one, the challenge is not selling but delivery: large pieces need transport and assembly, and any scratch means an expensive return. Work with a specialist moving company, state delivery and assembly times clearly, and consider starting with decor and small pieces before large furniture.

An online gold store

The best online gold store is one customers trust: the gram price at the time of order is clear, the making charge is stated, purity and weight are listed for every piece, and there is an invoice. Prices change, so you need a way to update them regularly, and with high order values you should confirm every order before shipping.

Grocery and food

Purchases repeat, but shelf life and fast delivery are non-negotiable. Start with a small delivery area you can serve well instead of promising nationwide delivery.

Digital products, dropshipping and subscription boxes

These are selling models more than categories, and each has its own payment and shipping rules. If they interest you, the full comparison of physical products, dropshipping, digital products and services is in starting an online store to sell: products, services, digital goods or dropshipping.

What makes an online store successful?

There is no official list of the best online store, in Egypt or in Saudi Arabia, and the names people mention change every year. But stores that last share some clear traits:

  1. A defined customer, not "everyone".
  2. Product pages that answer questions before the customer asks.
  3. Payment and delivery customers are used to. In Egypt, cash on delivery alongside an online option.
  4. Customer service that replies: a working WhatsApp number and a written returns policy.
  5. Numbers reviewed every week: profit per order, return rate and repeat customers.

If you want to study a working store before building yours, place an order with a brand you already buy from and note every step: photos, price, shipping and confirmation messages. It is the best practical lesson there is.

A one-page online store feasibility study

You do not need a thick report. Here is a feasibility study template to fill in with your own numbers, in an Excel sheet or on paper:

Line Question Hypothetical example
Idea and customer What do you sell, and to whom? Phone accessories for university students
Demand Are people searching for it? Check search interest on Google Trends for Egypt
Selling price What will you charge? EGP 250
Product cost What do you pay to buy or make it? EGP 110
Variable cost per order Shipping, returns, packaging, payment fees and ads EGP 80
Profit per order Price minus costs EGP 60
Monthly fixed costs Platform subscription plus any salaries or rent EGP 3,000
Break-even point Fixed costs ÷ profit per order 50 orders a month
Capital First stock and first ads Depends on quantity
Risks What could break the maths? Returns higher than expected

These numbers are only an illustration, not a market average. If you accept online payment, Paymob lists on its pricing page a standard rate of 2.75% + EGP 3 per transaction, so add it to the variable cost. The detail on shipping, returns and ad cost is in what a cash-on-delivery order really costs you.

If the break-even number looks unrealistic for your category, change the price, the product or your fixed costs before you start. That is exactly what a feasibility study is for.

How to test an idea before spending much

  1. Show the product on social media and watch the engagement and questions. See selling on Instagram and TikTok.
  2. Open a store on a free tier with a few products.
  3. Order a small quantity, or take pre-orders.
  4. Run a small ad and calculate the cost per order.
  5. Decide on the numbers: continue, adjust or change the idea.

FAQ

What is the best online store idea in Egypt?

There is no single best idea for everyone. The best one for you is where you have an edge: a good supplier, expertise or an audience. Then make sure the profit per order survives shipping, returns and ads.

Is an online furniture store a good idea?

It can be, but delivery and assembly are the hardest part, and returns are expensive. Start with decor and small pieces, and agree terms with a specialist moving company before selling large items.

How do I do a feasibility study for an online store?

Work out the profit per order after all variable costs, add up your monthly fixed costs, and divide fixed costs by profit per order to find your break-even point. If that number is realistic for your category, the idea is worth testing.

How much capital do I need?

It depends on the model. A product store needs money for first stock and first ads; dropshipping and digital products need far less. On a platform with a free tier, the store itself can cost nothing at the start.

How can I tell whether my idea will work before I start?

You cannot be certain, but you can reduce the risk: show the product on social media, open a small store, run a small ad and calculate the cost per order. Real numbers from your first 20 orders beat any forecast.
