WhatsApp Store in Egypt: Catalog vs Online Store

Building a WhatsApp store in Egypt? When the WhatsApp Business catalog is enough, when you need an online store, and how to keep WhatsApp for confirmations.

A WhatsApp store can mean two different setups: a catalog inside the WhatsApp Business app where customers order by chat, or an online store where customers check out themselves and WhatsApp handles confirmation and follow-up. The catalog works when orders are few and you answer every message yourself. Once volume grows, a store does the counting, the delivery pricing and the record-keeping that a chat thread never will.

TL;DR: Start with the WhatsApp Business catalog if you sell a short range to customers who already know you. Move to an online store when orders slip through the chat, you sell items you no longer have, or delivery fees get quoted wrong. Either way, keep WhatsApp for confirmations and service, and only message people who agreed to hear from you.

If you are still deciding whether to sell online at all, the wider picture is in our guide to starting an online store in Egypt. This piece is about one decision: what job WhatsApp should do in your business.

What people mean by "WhatsApp store"

Sellers in Egypt use the phrase for three quite different things.

  1. The WhatsApp Business catalog. When WhatsApp launched catalogs, it called them a mobile storefront. Each item carries a price, a description and a product code, and WhatsApp hosts the catalog itself, according to WhatsApp's own launch announcement.
  2. An online store with WhatsApp attached. Customers browse and order on a website. The order is then confirmed and tracked over WhatsApp.
  3. Chat-only selling. Photos in the thread, a "how much?" question, a typed reply. It works, but it is a job rather than a store, and it stops when you do.

The real difference is not how it looks. It is who records the order: you, by hand, or a system that does it for you.

WhatsApp catalog vs online store, side by side

Question WhatsApp Business catalog Online store + WhatsApp
Who records the order? You, from the chat The store, automatically
Stock levels Not tracked; you check yourself Deducted with each sale
Delivery fee Typed per customer Shown before checkout
Payment Usually cash on delivery or manual transfer Cash on delivery or an online gateway at checkout
Search visibility Lives inside the app Product pages can be indexed
Sales reporting None; a notebook or sheet Orders and products in one dashboard
Best for A small range, a few orders a day A wider range, ad-driven traffic

None of this makes the catalog a bad tool. It is quick to set up and built for small sellers. It was designed to display products, though, not to run what happens after the order.

When the catalog is enough

Stay with the catalog for now if most of these describe you:

  • You sell a few dozen products or fewer, and prices rarely change.
  • Most buyers are repeat customers or referrals, not strangers from ads.
  • You reply personally, and the daily order count fits on one page.
  • You know your stock by heart because quantities are small.

Use what the app already gives you. The WhatsApp Business app offers a business profile, greeting messages and away replies. Put your reply hours, the governorates you deliver to and how customers pay into the profile and the greeting. That alone removes half the repeated questions before you type a word.

Five signs you have outgrown it

When two or three of these happen in the same month, the catalog has become a cost:

  • You confirmed a size that sold out last week and had to apologise.
  • An order vanished because the chat scrolled past it during a busy evening.
  • You quoted the Cairo delivery fee to a customer in Aswan and absorbed the difference.
  • Your ads bring a stream of "price?" messages but few orders.
  • You cannot say which product made money last month, or how many orders were actually received.

A shopper arriving from an ad will not wait for a reply to learn the price. They want the price, the delivery fee and a checkout in under a minute, and a confirmation message afterwards. The full move from a social page to a store is covered in from Instagram store to real online store.

How to set up a WhatsApp store properly

Whichever route you start on, set things up in this order:

  1. Move your selling number to WhatsApp Business and keep it apart from your personal number from day one.
  2. Fill in the business profile completely. The WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy asks businesses to keep a profile with customer support contact details, accurate and up to date.
  3. List each product with a clear price, a short description and a product code. The code pays off later when you move to a store or a spreadsheet.
  4. Decide where the order happens. In the chat while you are small; in a store once you have range or ad spend.
  5. Write one standard confirmation message. Item, size, address, total including delivery, expected delivery window. The customer replies "confirmed" before anything ships.
  6. Log every order in one place. A sheet or a store dashboard. A chat is not a ledger.
  7. Get permission before marketing. The same policy says you may contact people only if they gave you their number and opted in, and you must honour any request to stop.

The confirmation step does the most to cut refused deliveries on cash-on-delivery orders. Scripts and timing are in the COD confirmation playbook.

A WhatsApp ordering system that scales

For most Egyptian sellers the strongest setup is a hybrid. The store handles anything a form does better than a person; WhatsApp handles anything a person does better than a form.

Step Where it happens Why
Browsing and price Product page No waiting for a reply to see the basics
Placing the order Store checkout Name, phone and address captured once, correctly
Confirmation WhatsApp Customers answer a chat faster than a call
Delivery updates WhatsApp Fewer "where is my order?" calls
Abandoned checkout WhatsApp reminder Brings back someone who nearly bought
After delivery WhatsApp A quick satisfaction check or review request

Notice how much of the table sits on WhatsApp. It is your best follow-up channel, which is exactly why daily promo blasts are a bad idea. Reminder etiquette for unfinished checkouts is covered in WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery.

Mistakes that cost a WhatsApp store

  • One number on one employee's phone. When that person is off, sales stop. Orders need to live somewhere the whole team can see.
  • Prices only in replies. Every shopper asks the same question and gets the same answer. Put the price on the catalog item or the product page.
  • Broadcasting to people who never opted in. Reports can follow, and you risk losing the number itself.
  • Photos without codes. A customer sends a screenshot and you cannot tell which colour or model they mean.
  • No standard confirmation. Every confirmation is worded differently, so the same address and size errors keep repeating.

How Baseet does this

On Baseet, customers order from your store's pages and each order lands in your dashboard straight away. Order confirmation, shipping status updates and abandoned-cart recovery then go out on WhatsApp automatically, so your chat time goes to the conversations that genuinely need a human. Stock is deducted with every sale and you get an alert before a product runs out, which stops you confirming a size you no longer have. You can start free, with no credit card.

FAQ

How do I create a WhatsApp store?

Install WhatsApp Business on your selling number, complete the business profile and add products to the catalog with a price, description and code. If you want customers to check out on their own, build an online store and keep WhatsApp for confirmation and follow-up.

Is the WhatsApp Business catalog enough on its own?

For a small range and a few orders a day, often yes. It shows products, prices and codes, but it does not track stock, price delivery or report on sales. As orders grow, all of that becomes manual work that eats your evenings.

Can customers pay online through a WhatsApp store?

The catalog displays products and prices; how the customer pays is arranged between you and them. For structured online payment, the simpler route is a store checkout with a payment gateway, followed by a WhatsApp confirmation.

Can I send offers to every number in my contacts?

No. WhatsApp's business policy allows you to message people only if they shared their number with you and opted in, and you must stop when asked. Send offers to subscribers only, and keep them infrequent and useful.

When should I move from the catalog to an online store?

When orders start slipping, when you sell items that are out of stock, or when ad traffic turns into questions instead of orders. At that point a store saves hours each week, and WhatsApp stays the channel your customers already trust.
